Working with BMA Model agency

I recently had the pleasure of working with the BMA model agency. BMA contacted me and asked if I could produce a new set of images for one of their ‘bright new faces.’ It coincided perfectly with an idea that I’ve been toying with for a couple of months. Sometime last year I came across the work from a great Germany photographer called Vincent Peters, he’s now based in the States and primarily works with big brands and celebrities alongside his fashion work. His work caught my eye because of the beautiful way he photographed his subjects. His style is black & white but shot in a Film Noir style of the old Hollywood films of the 30’s and 40’s. I’ve always loved this look and way of lighting subjects. It brings an incredible cinematic feel to the images. The idea behind this style is in using low-key lighting (rather than the evenly exposed 3-point lighting of classical Hollywood cinematography, film noir uses harsh shadows and contrasts of black and white. By careful positioning of the lights, I’m able to produce excellent atmospheric images that work beautifully, especially for fashion and beauty work.

Lifestyle Photography

It’s a fact that today thousands of magazines around the world, numerous websites and hundreds of outside billboards, bus shelters and advertising posters have all one thing in common. They all carry ‘lifestyle’ images. But what exactly are lifestyle images. Well, according to Wikipedia, lifestyle photography is “a style of portrait / people photography which aims to capture and document real-life events, situations, or milestones in an artistic manner and the art of the everyday.”
I’m personally being asked more and more for lifestyle images, not only from photo agents and libraries but now from private clients too. My business clients want images the show real life experiences from their ‘in the field workers’, workshops, and group activities to better sell their products. Private clients now are seemingly wanting that clean everyday happy family or ‘couples look’ that they’ve seen in those magazines, websites or on Tv adverts.

For my private clients, lifestyle sessions incorporate things that they would typically do. This could be hanging out at home, going to their favourite coffee shop, record shops, clothes or even bookshops. It’s about incorporating “real-life events” into these sessions.
Lifestyle locations are always chosen by clients. I also throw in a few ideas and situations myself, but I always ask them what they’d like to do, with the final choice being there’s. Locations should be special to you, something that you’ll remember. So do you love to take part in a particular sport or are you in to keeping fit? Do you or your kids love to cook, horse riding,  playing on the beach, or just walking the dog?

I act as a fly on the wall photographer, being as discreet as possible. Some people, families need a little direction, this is all good, all sessions are kept as natural as possible. It’s finding the right balance that’s most important to capturing the moments and activities that you’ll remember forever. It’s images that will go into your photo albums, or on your walls, ones that will be showed for many years to come.

If you’re in need of some lifestyle inspiration feel free to check out Logan Cole, Jenny Jimenez, and Tara Whitney.

Get in touch with me if you’d like a series of lifestyle images of yourself, family or as a couple. I’ll help you in producing a great set of images that you’ll love.

I’ve included a selection of lifestyle images here to illustrate my point.

New modelling portfolio for Emma with Studio-Luxe Photographic Services

I received an e-mail from the mother of an aspiring young Suffolk model recently. Sally contacted me regarding the possibility of producing a new modelling portfolio for her daughter, Emma.
Emma has been approached on numerous occasions to model for clothing clients but was a little reluctant to commit to these requests, mainly because she felt she lacked the necessary confidence. Emma and her mother felt that she needed a little experience in front of a camera first, away from any pressure that a commercial photo shoot would bring. I was able to help Emma with her posing and also how to feel comfortable when taking directions from photographers. The first day’s session was in my studio, with a second longer photo session at a beach location.
The results from our two days of photography are stunning! Emma certainly has the looks and a certain quality one needs in front of a camera to go on and pursue a career in the modelling industry.

I wish Emma all the best, and good luck with her modelling career.

Directing opening Scenes on ‘With Love from Suffolk’

Directing opening Scenes on ‘With Love from Suffolk’

While up in Scotland this year enjoying the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with my family, I received a phone call from one of the producers at Film Suffolk. I was asked if I’d like to direct the opening and closing scenes for their latest feature film ‘With Love From…Suffolk’.

With Love From…Suffolk is a feature film of 8 short romantic tales. Set entirely in Suffolk, it’s a funny and tender exploration of relationships – while also being a love letter to our magnificent county of Suffolk.

I was originally asked to supply still promotional photographs for the feature film. But due to my other work commitments I was, unfortunately, unable to find the time to work with the film units on a regular basis. So imagine my surprise went the call came, I couldn’t wait to find out more.

The film being produced jointly by Matthew McGuchan and Julien Mery from Film Suffolk http://www.withlovefromsuffolk.co.uk alongside a host of talented professional film crew members, all volunteering their time and expertise.
We filmed at the elegant Bruisyard Hall Country House, the weather forecast for the day wasn’t good, but luckily we worked around the showers. With the help of around 6o or so actors, crew, and staff members, we managed to produce series of scenes that even Martin Scorsese would have been proud to have put his name too.

You can see the photographs from our day on my fellow photographer’s great blog post here: http://www.dominicwhiten.co.uk/weddings/with-love-from-suffolk-film-shoot-at-bruisyard-hall/

  • On a bitterly cold morning in February I joined a happy bunch of people who together all belong to the Felixstowe Swimscapes. A hardy bunch of individuals who come together every Saturday morning, come rain, come shine or snow, or even worse, to swim across a part of the Felixstowe shoreline. I was wearing my thermals trying to keep out the bracing cold wind, which felt more like minus 5 rather just over 5 degrees. What would make seemingly shane intelligent people venture out in the middle of winter into the bitterly cold seawater? Well the answer to that question is just pure and simple, a love for swimming, and it doesn’t matter where they swim, just as long as they can test themselves in all conditions. These hardly souls who numbered up to twenty and are still actively looking for new members. Check out their Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/FelixstoweSwimscapes

Growing Pains in Southern Sudan – Even It Up

Growing Pains in Southern Sudan  – Oxfam Even It Up:

My image of the little Amir from the Jamam refugee camp has just been chosen as the main picture for Oxfam ‘Even it up’ 2104 nationwide UK poster and press campaign.

In 2012 I was sent by the Daily Mirror newspaper to Juba in Southern Sudan in North-East Africa to document ‘Liberation Day’. The birth of a new country, the Republic of South Sudan. A great job and a real privilege to be at the birth of the world’s newest nation. After years of bloody fighting and political turmoil between the Islamic government in north and the separatists in the south, it was agreed that Sudan should be divided into two separate countries. Sudan was the world’s 10th largest country. One year on from that momentous day I was asked to go back to Sudan with the UK Aid charity, Oxfam. I and feature writer Ros Wynne Jones were there to cover the countries first anniversary, to see how the country was progress during that last 12 months. Well its fair to say that Southern Sudan is running on empty, fighting as broken out again, the country is broke and the rebels seem to be in charge of what limited authority there is. It was never going to be an easy process, and self rule was never going to be a panacea the country was hoping for, but maybe it’s a little too early to rush to judgement. So these growing pains in Southern Sudan, the world’s newest country will have to be endure for a little while longer. But if there’s one thing Southern Sudan has on its hands is time, time to repair and hopefully move on.

Personal bespoke portraits

I’ve just launched a new service on my Studio-Luxe website and it centres around a Personal bespoke portraits. So my first client was the beautiful Imogen who requested a portrait shoot based on a dance theme. Imogen loves contemporary dance and also as a keen interest in Ballet, so we used this idea as main theme for her photo session. http://www.studio-luxe.co.uk

I also wanted a different backdrop other than a dance studio or a raised stage to take the photographs. One of my favourite places in Suffolk is Southwold beach, which is just beautiful, a little similar to a couple of beaches I’ve work on in Los Angeles. I was very happy with the final images, but Imogen, who is now on her first year at University, as some great portfolio images for her photo book which she’ll give to family and also keep one for herself.

A Boho Inspired fashion photo shoot with Baccara

I’d like to introduce you to Baccara Ashbury. Baccara saw my website and immediately called me to say that she wanted to be in your own fashion photo shoot. Baccara has had some modelled experience some years before and really wanted to try her hand at being in front of the camera again. One of the services I offer at Studio Luxe is a bespoke themed fashion shoot for discerning clients. Whatever your interested, we can make your fashion shoot look fantastic. We settled for a BoHo fashion theme for Baccara and she looked beautiful! I hired a great farm in my area and also hired the most beautiful and funkiest looking VW camper-van in Suffolk. The weather was great, the make-up by Cheri Knock was faultless and the pictures superb, even if I say so myself. So if you fancy starring in your own full on fashion shoot, with top make-up artist and a top hairstylist, then just get in touch and we’ll get together and we’ll put together your own personal photo shoot.
